Making Him the end, and not merely a means
lesmartyrs: C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed: “Am I, for instance, just sliding back to God because I know that if there’s any road to Helen Joy [his late wife], it runs through Him? But then of course I know perfectly well that He can’t be used as a road. If you’re approaching Him not as a goal but a road, not as the end but as a means, you’re not really approaching Him at all. That’s what was...

Hey Los Angeles/Orange County/Inland Empire...
aheram: Ideally it would be a weekend, but I think it would be a great way to really forge a connection with each other if we actually network in person. Plus, we might actually end up befriending each other. Reblog if you want to do this and/or just wish you were here to make it out here. Also, reblog for liberty and anti-imperialism. Count me in.

wisdomfish: God forewarned of the folly of forsaking Him by asking for government rule in His place: …The elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel and said to him, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being...

How Government Hurts The Poor
laliberty: Just a few quick examples, as to elaborate on this question: Minimum wage laws ostensibly exist to offer poorer workers better pay, but tend to leave the lower-skilled workers unemployed instead. 1 Tariffs and tough anti-immigration laws purportedly protect American citizens - poor, lower-skilled individuals in particular - from the “unfair” competition of cheap foreigners. Instead,...

My dashboard has been sorely lacking libertarian infighting lately, and it’s a shame because infighting is what libertarians do best. It seems that even my snide remarks and sly digs don’t succeed in provoking anyone anymore, despite the fact that we all know that when libertarians piss each other off, everyone has fun. For my part though, I do take pleasure in knowing that...

nomadologue: virtueofselfishness: “It is a duty to preserve one’s life, and moreover everyone has a direct inclination to do so. But for that reason the often anxious care which most men take of it has no intrinsic worth, and the maxim of doing so has no moral import. They preserve their lives according to duty, but not from duty. But if adversities and hopeless sorrow completely take away the...

So, about ISFLC 2012...
I said I would make a detailed post about the International Students for Liberty Conference, but I don’t know where to begin other than to say that it was awesome! As usual with libertarian conferences/gatherings, the speaker lineup was great. Among the best were presentations given by Anthony Gregory (who is slowly becoming my favorite person), Radley Balko (though he always seems to...

Jury nullification is real thing. It’s implicit in your right to a jury trial under the 6th Amendment. IT IS A THING. That judges refuse to recognize its legitimacy as a Constitutional doctrine is another matter entirely. But it does exist. And it has a great history (from a libertarian perspective) of being used by juries refusing to prosecute under prohibition, fugitive slave laws, etc.

Why libertarians should not go to law school
Today I called my mom to warn her that I’m probably going to be arrested several times over the course of my life, and that she should be prepared for that. I came to that realization today in my Criminal Law class when I was playing defense attorney and couldn’t come up with any plausible defenses of my client on BS charges for a “crime” that actually wasn’t a crime...

Getting called out in class.
Classmate: Hey, are you going to law prom this weekend?
Me: No, I can't. I'm gonna be at a conference in DC.
Classmate: WTF? You're rioting in Washington instead of going to law prom?
Me: Um, lol.
Classmate: I can't believe you're ditching us to occupy Wall Street, or whatever the hell you liberal hippies do.
Rest of class: OOOOOOOOHHHH.
